Aon

Actuarial Consulting Intern

June - August 2017 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I did real actuarial consulting work, not just an intern project, and had the opportunity to work on 8 client teams which exposed me to different aspects of consulting work and different people in the work group.

What I wish was different

Advice

Take advantage of the opportunity to work with many different people as you will learn a lot more about the job, the people, and what working there could look like for you in the long term.

Commercial Brokerage Intern

June - August 2018 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

The people I worked with and the work environment.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship program was slightly more organized.

Advice

Form relationships with the people you are working with (especially your superiors) because insurance brokerage is largely a relationship-based industry.

Consulting Analyst Intern

May - August 2018 • Waltham, MA

What I liked

Was given the same work as actual consulting Analysts, working directly on client work. I worked for a small group within Aon called Radford Consulting. Radford is an industry leader in compensations consulting for life science and technology companies. I left this internship with a great idea of what it would be like to work here full time and what it would be like to work full time for a consulting firm in general.

What I wish was different

A more structured “yes” or “no” return offer system. Everything else was great.

Advice

Ask questions when things are confusing on the job. Great way to learn more (and not fall behind) but also to build relationships and show that you are interested in the content of the work.

Account Executive Intern (Insurance)

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

A lot of team inclusion, treating you like a true employee, going to many client meetings. Intern program had a lot of events with speakers including many leaders of the company, sessions to understand certain areas of the company further, and even a baseball game outing. Always open to any and all questions and very friendly to go up to anyone to get to know what other business units do so essentially a lot of networking and learning about otheres along with your own designated team.

What I wish was different

Sometimes too large of an intern group made things harder to coordinate among each other but the company does a great job trying to help everyone get to know each other and the level they are working with.

Advice

Be open and always curious! Meeting new people can be a key measure in your success. That being said, don't forget to express fond interest in your role or make measures to find what it is your interest truly may be. It is important to show that you are not around to just make friends but also dedicated to working hard.

Finance Leadership Program Intern

June - August 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Great company culture. They held several events throughout the summer for the interns to network with each other and the full-time employees in the rotational program. They assign you with a mentor who has graduated the rotational program into an established role within one of the financial teams (FP&A, Internal Audit, M&A, SOx, etc.) Aon has done a great job of bringing in college graduates over the recent years, and you never feel like there is a large age gap between you and the people you would work with on your team and around the office.

What I wish was different

My team was always busy but the work within the team required a lot of background knowledge on the responsibilities and processes so I was limited in my ability to assist the team on a day-to-day basis.

Advice

The employees who run the FLP intern program preach about networking and taking time to meet different people across various finance organizations at Aon. I would make sure you take complete advantage of the time you have to hear from people and get to know how they got to the position they are at today.

Health Solutions Summer Intern

June - August 2019 • Norwalk, CT

What I liked

I really enjoyed how small the office was-- I got to work on very small teams, got a lot of face-time with senior leadership, and support from Analysts.

What I wish was different

I wish the program was more structured. I do not believe this is typical to Aon because I was in a particularly small office and there was only one other intern beside myself so it was easiest to play everything by ear.

Advice

Take advantage of the training that they provide to the office, it is a great time to enhance your Excel skills and other business knowledge.

Actuarial Intern

June - August 2019 • Somerset, NJ

What I liked

Younger full-time employees did not care about their work very much, so the environment was relaxed most of the time.

What I wish was different

Very poor structure of internship (almost unstructured). Work was particularly uninteresting and did not contribute to the learning of the interns. Very little supervision and instruction. Full-time employees were all very discontent with their jobs and contributed to the depressive environment of the office.

Advice

If possible, do not accept this internship, though it may be worthwhile as a stepping stone if there are no alternatives. Try your best to get the most interesting projects, anything less will deplete your motivation and even the most interesting work is very numbing.

Risk Solutions Intern

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

It was incredibly hands-on and I was given a lot of meaningful work. I was able to attend meetings, lunches, and networking events. I was able to make a lot of valuable connections and experience real work instead of getting coffee or filing paperwork. I also loved working in the heart of downtown Boston, which made for some great experiences.

What I wish was different

I wish that my intern class had planned and done more events together so we could've become closer friends.

Advice

Make sure to make the most out of your experience! Network and talk to as many people as you can, attend every event that is offered, and try to learn something new everyday.

Health and Benefits Intern

June - August 2019 • Denver, CO

What I liked

This past summer I was able to collaborate with colleagues (specialists, analysts, consultants, senior consultants, and account executives) through various of projects such as contract and document reviews, input data, benchmarking, attend client meetings, and complete compliance documents. The Denver office gave me autonomy with my projects and time, which I appreciated and this allowed me to be a self starter. I valued this office especially because they continuously asked for my input.

What I wish was different

I wish the projects was more challenging and make me think critically.

Advice

One piece of advice I would like to share is to come in with an open-mind and continue to be proactive even during busy times.

Reinsurance Treaty Intern

July - August 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I really enjoyed the structure of the internship program. I spent each week shadowing a different broker on their various accounts. While I was shadowing I also had various education on reinsurance specifically from my team or other education opportunities from Aon on a corporate level.

What I wish was different

I really enjoyed my internship, and wouldn't have changed anything from my experiences this summer.

Advice

One piece of advice I was given was to network with numerous people in various parts of Aon. I took this advice and met with numerous people to better understand all the aspects of Aon.

Health Solutions Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The people are all very friendly and very willing to talk to interns.

What I wish was different

I wish I had learned more. Interns and new hires are barely given any work at all, and the company culture is very much 9-5. Not the most intense internship experience but good exposure to the insurance industry. overall if you're proactive about networking.

Advice

If you're looking for an easy transition to corporate America, this is it. If you're looking for an intense summer internship where you learn so much and are given a lot of responsibility, this is not the internship for you.
