Product Development Intern

Job Overview:

Alpha Engineered Composites is a global leader in highly engineered textile composites designed for a wide range of industries. Our core technologies are used to develop custom solutions for materials used in a variety of automotive, aerospace, marine, energy conservation, construction, safety, and other process-specific applications.

Alpha is looking for a Product Development Intern to support development of novel and innovative adhesives and coatings formulations for use in highly engineered textile composites. The position is responsible for supporting new product development projects in a team environment, but specifically in the prototype development and design verification stages. The position is hands-on in the laboratory and on the production floor, as well as analytically based.

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Responsible for participating in Design for Six Sigma stage gate projects for development and commercialization of new textile composite products and technology
  • Responsible for independently completing laboratory-based experiments with organized data collection, statistical analysis, and reporting within specified project timelines, as directed by the Senior Product Development Engineer
  • Responsible for becoming proficient in mechanical test equipment and instrumentation methods, laboratory mixing and formulation techniques, and learning to correlate laboratory test results with material performance in application
  • Responsible for developing a technical understanding of an array of polymeric compounds and functional processing parameters via applicable manufacturing operations.
  • Responsible for maintaining an electronic laboratory notebook containing all experiments, and participating in round table presentations with Product Development Team in monthly technical review meetings
  • Responsible for gaining familiarity with Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP) nomenclature and data entry procedures for active development projects

Qualifications:
  • Pursuing a degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline
  • Hands-on laboratory experience in an industrial or academic setting
  • Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills
  • Highly motivated and results-oriented individual looking for a challenging and rewarding work environment, with a strong emphasis on process safety and data-driven innovation
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs. and work in an environment, which has the potential for high noise levels, rotating machinery, equipment temperatures well above ambient, and the occasional chemical odor.
