Summer Internship Opportunity at Maya Angelou Academy

The Organization
Since it began operating in 1997, the See Forever Foundation's mission has been to create learning communities in lower income urban areas where all students, particularly those who have not succeeded in traditional schools, can succeed academically and socially. The Foundation operates the Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools in DC, as well as the Maya Angelou Academy at New Beginnings’ secure facility for committed youth in Laurel, MD. Our students develop the academic, social, and employment skills they need to build rewarding lives and promote positive change.

Position Overview
The See Forever Foundation is recruiting current college students and recent graduates to work with us this summer at the Maya Angelou Academy in Laurel, MD. Students who are enrolled in education programs or are interested in pursuing a career in teaching are especially encouraged to apply.

The Maya Angelou Academy is the school at New Beginnings, a secure juvenile detention facility serving young men and women from the District of Columbia who have been adjudicated delinquent. Summer interns will take on critical roles over the summer, serving as teaching assistants in the classrooms and program leaders in our morning assemblies. 

All interns must be available from Wednesday, June 28, through Monday, July 31, 2023. Each school day will begin at 7:30 and end at 3:00. 

Working as a summer intern at Maya Angelou Academy represents a unique opportunity to learn what it is like to be a teacher and to work day-to-day with a progressive organization that is directly involved in improving the education and juvenile justice system in Washington, DC. 

Please note that public transportation to the Academy is limited. A personal vehicle is required. 

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Academy teachers with lesson planning and material production
  • Be an active participant in the classroom
  • Set-up and breakdown of classroom space, including securing and organizing the appropriate materials
  • Collaborate with staff to establish and maintain a supportive and structured environment for the students
  • Serve as a leader at the morning assembly each day of the program 
  • Serve as a leader in developing social-emotional learning activities

Qualifications
  • Must be between 19 – 30 years of age, completed at least one year of college, and have plans to complete the college degree
  • Maintain or have graduated with at least a 2.5 G.P.A.
  • Solid commitment to education and youth advocacy
  • Ability to motivate others and work as part of an intergenerational team 
  • Strong appreciation and understanding of individual cultural history and the willingness to be open and respectful of all cultures 
  • Willingness to strive for excellence in all areas 
  • Ability to think critically and analytically 
  • Exhibit behavior and positive attitude; model a mature and professional demeanor 
  • Excellent written and verbal skills 
  • Strong interpersonal skills 
  • Authorization for background check for criminal and child protective findings

Site Description
The Maya Angelou Academy at New Beginnings is the long-term juvenile facility located in Laurel, MD. Maya Angelou Academy at New Beginnings serves youth ages 13-21. The school is located inside New Beginnings Youth Development Center. Our students develop the academic, social, and employment skills they need to build rewarding lives and promote positive change.


Compensation
Interns will earn a stipend of $150 per day and a one-time $200 travel stipend; this amount will increase if you are a returning intern. The internship includes three days of training and orientation and 21 days of instruction.
