USDA-ARS Remote Plant Biology Summer Internship (Part-time)

ARS Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS) at the Soybean Genomics and Improvement Laboratory located in Beltsville, MD. The participant will work remotely and interact with the mentor by telework. Visiting arrangements to the laboratory will be made as needed but will not be required.

Research ProjectUnder the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience working with the plant model system Marchantia polymorpha, including culturing, genetic crossing, and preparing samples for metabolomic analysis. 

Learning ObjectivesYou will learn the steps involved in performing state-of-the-art metabolomics, from data collection to data analysis, and you will use metabolomics to measure plant hormone levels in various phytohormone mutants in M. polymorpha.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for two months in the summer, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is part-time (30 hours per week).

Participant StipendThe participant(s) will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. 

Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and ARS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, ARS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
