CDC Program Evaluation Internship

CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available with the Evaluation and Program Effectiveness Team (EPET) within the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP) at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The CDC is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: This research opportunity will focus on EPET’s portfolio of funded programs and initiatives around evaluation within DHDSP. The mission of EPET is "advancing health equity in cardiovascular health by building evaluation capacity, conducting effective and equitable evaluations, and fostering evaluation use." Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will receive training with developing and implementing applied research and evaluation activities and support efforts of DHDSP programs by:

Activities with EPET include special topic areas that include evaluation, economics, applied policy research, communication, disseminating products, and/or building collaborations. The participant may gain experience and training in activities that may include 1) conducting literature or systematic reviews, providing input into translational research, and identifying or designing tools and products to translate work; 2) Contribute to communicating Division initiatives and the development of tools and products; 3) Support the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Division initiatives.

Learning Objectives: The ORISE participant will learn: 1) methods for monitoring and implementing evaluations of Division interventions, 2) methods for evaluations (process and outcome focused), 3) methods for data collection tool development, and analysis of findings, 4) approaches to inject health equity in all evaluation and translation work, 5) approaches to disseminating public health programmatic and evaluation recommendations to improve cardiovascular health, 6) development of new data visualization methods for dissemination products, and 7) collaborating effectively with a fast paced public health evaluation team.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. A health insurance supplement or reimbursement will be provided along with allowances for travel and training for professional development.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by the anticipated appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
