Research Technician, Temp-to-Hire (Bioimage Annotator), Project Technical Resources

Janelia Research Campus is a pioneering research center in Ashburn, Virginia, where scientists pursue fundamental questions in neuroscience and imaging. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) launched Janelia in 2006, establishing an intellectually distinctive environment for scientists to do creative, collaborative, hands-on work.   Our integrated teams of biologists, computational scientists, and tool-builders pursue a small number of scientific questions with potential for transformative impact.  We share our methods, results, and tools with the scientific community.  It is a uniquely innovative and collaborative atmosphere that reflects HHMI’s reputation for excellence.

About the Role:
The Project Technical Resources team (PTR) is growing to better support Janelia Team Projects and laboratories. We are seeking full or part-time technicians who have an interest in extracting information from 3D or 4D microscopy images or recorded animal behavior. This information will aid analysis of the experimental data or help establish automated image processing/machine learning pipelines. Technicians will typically be involved in at least two different projects. In addition to annotations, individual portfolios may include other tasks, such as performing quantitative animal behavior experiments or assisting in other areas of PTR support.
Temp-to-hire applicants will be trained in all required techniques upon starting work. After training, technicians may work under supervision by the scientific project lead, collaborating with other team members, labs/project teams, and support groups.
Please note: Applicants with prior experience in relevant annotation work and/or coding may be considered for immediate HHMI employment.

What We Provide:
  • Gain research experience in a collaborative and supportive research environment.
  • A diverse team looking forward to exploring how your unique background, talents, and interests could contribute to PTRs ability to support science at Janelia.
  • Hybrid schedule possible

What You'll Do:
  • Gain an in-depth knowledge of using commercial and custom annotation software
  • Collect relevant data from multidimensional images and videos
  • Review/correct automatically or manually generated annotations
  • Help design and complete day-to-day experiments for quantitative behavioral assays
  • Perform computer automated analysis and quality control on large data sets
  • Perform preparative work for behavioral experiments, such as fly crosses and fly sorting
  • Prepare solutions and perform other routine lab chores as required

What You Bring:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Associate Degree with equivalent experience in biology, biomedical engineering, or computer science
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computers
  • Work experience in a team-oriented environment and skills to be a good team-player
  • Interest in engaging in ground-breaking research in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Good organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate efficiently with collaborators

Physical Requirements:
  • Good color vision
  • Ability to visualize in 3D
  • Ability to sit for several hours at a computer or microscope (with breaks)
