What I liked

Through this internship, I got to work as a teacher's assistant in an ABA classroom at a preschool in Brooklyn. Everyone there was extremely nice and welcoming. I got hands-on experience working with and taking care of several children with developmental delays. I was able to learn about their day to day routines in the classroom, participate in recreational activities, and instruct them on personal habits. I was exposed to the PECS system and used it with the children to communicate wants and needs. I also learned more about positive reinforcement and sat in on speech therapy sessions! Overall, this experience was highly rewarding. I grew an attachment to the teachers, therapists, and the children that I worked with. I'm thankful that I got to immerse myself into this community and learn more about Applied Behavior Analysis and Speech Therapy.

What I wish was different

At the beginning of my internship, I wasn't sure of the tasks that I needed to do or exactly what was expected of me, until I asked. I wish that it was explained to me right on the spot or prior to my first day. It also took a while to get the internship finalized and get in contact with the principal of the school, which was a little discouraging. However, once contact was initiated, everything went smoothly. The coordinator of the internship program and the principal of the preschool were both super helpful!

Advice

One piece of advice that I'd like to share is to do your best and put your all into what you do. Go into it with excitement and an open mind. Don't get discouraged if something doesn't go the way you want it to, just learn from it and be thankful for the lesson.
