Eli Lilly and Company

Information and Digital Solutions Intern

May - August 2020 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

I loved everything about my internship. I worked on a meaningful, challenging project that directly impacted the company and helped me to grow both technically and professionally. The networking aspect of the internship was also one of the best parts. I had over 100 individual conversations with people across the company allowing me to get a really strong idea about company culture and everyday work. Most importantly, Eli Lilly showed its value of integrity in honoring the internships (wage and length) even with the difficulties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

What I wish was different

The internship ended up being virtual due to circumstances so that was the only thing I would have changed if I could.

Advice

If you want to work for Lilly, I recommend doing thorough research. Pharmaceuticals is a particular industry with its own unique array of challenges that you should familiarize yourself with before applying. That being said, within those challenges are huge opportunity for problem solving, so don't let that turn you away. I would also advise you to understand the Lilly culture and values because it is a part of all the work happening at there socially, professionally, and tactically. If you find yourself in alignment with those values, express that to them and give examples of ways that you demonstrate them in your personal and academic life.

Manufacturing Engineer Intern

January - May 2022 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

This Job was amazing. The people I got to work with were awesome as well as the project. I was given real work that I feel will benefit my career rather than just an "intern project". The company culture is wonderful if you like a down to earth place to be.

What I wish was different

I would have enjoyed seeing more people towards the beginning but that's a result of Covid. Regulations lifted overtime which was good!

Advice

Learn from the people around you. Understand what they are good at and learn from them. This will develop your network as well as be useful when trying to solve complex problems.

What I liked

Amazing culture and concern for people and employees. Eli Lilly and Company really value their employees because of the importance of the work they do. Their internship program did a great job exposing me to real-life industrial problems that will be directly applicable to my career as a Chemical Engineer. Eli Lilly's commitment to inclusion and the overall well-being of its employees is outstanding and unparalleled in the biopharmaceutical industry!

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was remote, however, this was due solely to COVID-19 risk and restrictions.

Medicines Innovation Hub Intern

June - August 2020 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

I loved the company's enthusiasm about their interns. There were so many opportunities to network, despite the challenges of the pandemic, and every single person I met was so welcoming and interested in my passions and career goals. I got great in-person lab experience and had the opportunity to present my project and write a report at the end of the internship. Lilly took excellent care of their interns and provided high-quality housing accommodations close to the work site. I highly recommend considering this internship if you are interested in a career in research!

What I wish was different

I wish there had been an opportunity to spend more time working in the lab and meeting people in person, but it was not feasible with the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, I was still very impressed with Lilly's efforts to provide us with a valuable summer experience.

Advice

Networking and making connections with other scientists is so important. Take every opportunity given to you to connect with other interns and Lilly employees, and be sure to stay in touch with them after the internship, too.

Data Analytics Intern

June - July 2020 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

I enjoyed my internship because it was remote, so I could work while spending time with my family at home. I also enjoyed that I had a project which had a direct impact on process improvement for the business function in which I interned. I had a lot of support from my project coach and supervisors, so I felt welcomed as an intern.

What I wish was different

I wish we had an opportunity to visit Lilly and get a tour of the facilities, but we were not able to do this due to the pandemic. I also wish I had met more of the other interns in other business functions.

Advice

Don't be afraid to apply for internships outside of your major/previous job experiences. I may not have been the most experienced person for this internship on paper, but with perseverance and collaboration, I was able to gain the respect of my supervisors and make a great project.

Academic Contractor for Global Diversity & Inclusion Office

May 2019 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

This has been an extremely educational experience for me. I have learned so much about working in corporate America. This position is also unique because I wonder under an employee in Employee Communications on a Human Resources team, which has exposed me to two different (but both highly critical) departments of Lilly.

What I wish was different

I wish this position was paid with a salary rather than an hourly rate. This would have eliminated the pressure of having to put in more hours.

Advice

Build your network within Lilly. Everyone there wants to see interns succeed and eventually return to the company as full-time employees. Schedule 1:1's with as many people as you can from various departments. Attend events hosted by the Global Diversity & Inclusion Office and their Employee Resource Groups. Make the most of your experience here because it will pay off in the long-run.
