GEICO

Business Leadership Intern

May - August 2018 • Richardson, TX

What I liked

I liked that we got to divide into groups of interns that I did not know in order to identify opportunities in the company and present it to upper-management. I got to make new lifelong friends and learn what the corporate world was like. I was able to learn so much about an unfamiliar industry- insurance. I got to participate in philanthropy events to help out the community. I got to learn more about my own strengths and weaknesses and grow as a business professional and team member.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been a project based on the technology of the company, since that is my major. But, the IT team is located in Maryland so the Dallas location does not deal with it. It just would have been interesting to learn about because GEICO has a great mobile app.

Advice

I would say to be open-minded and take every opportunity seriously. The coordinators and upper-management notice everything so act professional and ask lots of questions! As you work on projects, utilize as many resources as you can in the company to get the full experience. Reach out to upper-management, other regions, the IT department, and call competitors to get the most amount of information to back up your ideas.

Business Leadership Intern

June - July 2018 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

The internship was very hands on, and I was never treated like the "intern". Everyday I felt like an important asset to the company, the multiple projects that I worked on were presented directly to management. Additionally, the company has a true open door policy, anytime I had questions there were multiple managers that I could go to for help!

What I wish was different

I would not have changed anything about this internship, everyone wanted the best for me!

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience would be to not be afraid to make mistakes. Every project that I worked on throughout the internship was a real issue that GEICO wanted a fresh pair of eyes to analyze and present on.

Business Leadership Intern

June - August 2018 • Coralville, IA

What I liked

I was able to get a true feel for the company. They gave us a project to complete, which required us to interview associates from all different positions within the branch. This gave me a great opportunity to work on my professional communication skills within a real workplace setting.

What I wish was different

I wish the schedule had been formatted differently for the other activities that we did outside of the project.

Advice

Regardless of what major you are, I think this is a beneficial internship. There were interns with business related degrees, but there were also some with liberal arts focused degrees. The diversity truly made the projects turn out well because of all the different perspectives.

What I liked

-Tons of one-on-one time with upper level management! -You receive lots of feedback about your leadership and presentation skills. -Develop lasting friendships with fellow interns.

What I wish was different

NOTHING! The internship caters to everyone’s want and needs. For example, I am a marketing major so I wanted to learn more about their marketing department. The director of HR reached out and set me up with a contact in their marketing department in DC and I was able to set up a call with her.

Advice

Be eager to learn. Take advantage of EVERY opportunity. Be receptive to feedback. HAVE FUN!!!

Business Leadership Summer Intern

June - August 2018 • Fredericksburg, VA

What I liked

Incredible access to management. Like, it's crazy - if we had a question for the regional vice president, we could email him at any time and he'd get back within an hour. Everyone I met in management was driven, humble, and deeply knowledgeable.

What I wish was different

A little too much handholding at some points. I wish I'd realized early on that EVERYTHING we were learning could end up being relevant for our projects.

Advice

Pay close attention and really listen when managers describe the function of their departments and how it all connects. It will let you do your job better.
