What I liked

What I wish was different

Working remotely due to covid made it more difficult to reach out to management for quick assistance and I prefer the in person contact that we had leading up to March. It helps me stay focused and motivated.

business leadership intern

June - July 2019 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

The atmosphere. The people at GEICO are very welcoming and willing to help.

What I wish was different

The internship was not very structured and I wish we had more hands-on tasks and fewer seminars.

Advice

Ask questions, make friends. It seems like you won't need to do this, but that's what I wish I would've done more from the start.

Business Leadership Intern

June - August 2019 • Richardson, TX

What I liked

The internship was very helpful in determining whether or not you would be a good fit for GEICO. In addition, the internship did not just involve "manual labor," but creative problem-solving on different problems facing GEICO. We presented our recommendations to the Senior VP of the Dallas Office.

What I wish was different

I can't really think of anything!

Advice

Make sure to network with whomever you meet and always take initiative when you can help.

Leadership Intern

May - August 2019 • Macon, GA

What I liked

I liked the program's structure, the mentors, and the pay! I felt like we were doing real work for the company and solving problems with excellent guidance. I made some great friends and learned the ups and downs of both insurance and what it's like to live a 9 to 5 lifestyle.

What I wish was different

The housing that they provided was awful although they are improving upon that. Additionally, there was a very wide array of maturity levels and intentions for taking the internship which made some team members frustrating. Finally, we had to work with another regional office and the rivalry was too strong by the time we worked together, resulting in less productivity and collaboration.

Advice

I would say find a mentor immediately, don't be afraid to ask questions, and don't take yourself too seriously. Feel out the crowd that you are working with and realize that although this is a corporate internship it's okay to make friends and goof off a little. Also, get ready to work in a LOT of teams, some that will have incapable people, loud people, but some awesome people.

Business Leadership Summer Intern

May - August 2019 • Macon, GA

What I liked

The quality of this internship was incredible! From day one, the leadership team at GEICO encouraged their interns to "dig in" to real business problems that the company is facing. They utilized us as consultants of sorts, tasking us with coming up with solutions to pain points across several lines of business. And in one case, we actually proposed a solution that was placed into effect within a week or two. They truly listened to our ideas and encouraged us to look deep into data, beyond the surface of problems, and into the root causes.

What I wish was different

Honestly, this internship was perfect.

Advice

The doors of upper management are wide open... Seek guidance as often as possible and build relationships with the leaders of this billion dollar business.

Business Leadership Intern

June - July 2019 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

GEICO is very focused on increasing growth opportunities for associates. The four projects we completed as interns incorporated that growth mindset and exposed us to all areas of the auto-insurance business. We learned about the day-to-day operations from an associate, supervisor, and manager perspective as well as having sessions with corporate executives (including an in-person session with the CEO) that helped develop our understanding of GEICO's business strategy.

What I wish was different

The potential downsides of this internship are that the pay is less competitive than other corporations of this size and the internship is shorter (it lasted for a little under two months). I would have appreciated a higher hourly wage and the opportunity to spend more time doing the internship. Bear this in mind but do not let this hold you back from pursuing the internship!

Advice

GEICO is very encouraging about their open door policy and gives you the chance to build a professional network with some amazing individuals. Do not hold back in scheduling meetings and creating opportunities to talk with company personnel. They really value their interns!

Advice

Business leadership summer internship

June - August 2019 • Renton, WA

What I liked

It was a great experience that helped me make new business connections. The job was fun and not stressful, and I received an offer that I accepted

What I wish was different

Nothing, the people were great and it was a great experience

Advice

I would say that the biggest thing to do now a days is learn how to communicate with people. Everyone is now becoming more introverted with the new advancements to technology so people skills are a top priority for most jobs.

Business Leadership Development Intern

June - August 2019 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

I liked getting to know the other interns and being able to work in teams on different projects. I also enjoyed listening to leadership seminars by management leaders at Geico and getting to shadow leaders in the different departments to see what their job is like day-to-day.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more projects that we could present bi-weekly instead of at the end of the internship because after a while, working on the same projects had gotten boring and repetitive.

Advice

Don't procrastinate your projects until the very end and utilize all the resources you have in order to produce the best work!

Business Leadership Summer Internship

June - August 2019 • Fredericksburg, VA

What I liked

I loved how much GEICO really invested into the interns. They truly equipped us to be able to perform well and to succeed in many aspects off our personal and professional development. I liked the real-time business project that we were given and I loved the fact that they were willing to implement some of our recommendations.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a better understanding at the beginning of what I was getting myself into. I knew I would be trained as a leader and get to work on projects, but I had no idea how much GEICO truly had in store for each of us throughout the internship!

Advice

I would recommend living in the apartments with the other interns if you are going to take this internship. It was an amazing opportunity to get to engage with the other interns outside of the work setting. We played volleyball, went on walks, got food, had game nights, and just hung out. It definitely added to the overall experience.
