Health Career Opportunity Program Student Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunity to meet patients and shadow full time physical therapists over a number of weeks. I was able to develop relationships with patients and the physical therapists I worked with, which helped me learn and made the overall experience more positive.

What I wish was different

Of course, I wish it had been longer! I also wish I had an opportunity to get to know the other student interns better.

Advice

Come prepared for a full day of learning each day and be open to new experiences.

What I liked

I loved the sense of community and support that I found among my colleges at NYU langone. They were very invested in my learning experience and did the best that they could to advocate for my involvement in any experience that would add to my knowledge and skills. Furthermore, there is a very team-driven atmosphere at NYU langone, which made for a smoother experience overall.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been an aspect of this experience that allowed us to explore varied areas of nursing, such as a shadow day. Ultimately, I was grateful to have worked on the unit that I did and to have the familiarity in this area, but I also think it would have been valuable to learn more about other types of nursing.

Advice

Although the staff works very hard to foster your involvement, it is your experience and you should make the effort to further your knowledge. Ask questions, correlate the patient condition with symptoms and treatments, ask to observe procedures or certain aspects of care that you haven't been exposed to. You can learn a lot from taking this attitude of always wanting to learn and this also shows your colleges that you take initiative and invest in your learning, which makes them more likely to pull you to show you things they might not otherwise.

What I liked

I really liked the independence my position required. I was doing mostly exploratory work, so I could basically approach from any direction I wanted.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more communication about job specifics before I got there. I didn't find out what time the lab opened every day until I got there.

Advice

Bioinformatics research is super cool! But make sure you know what your PI is like before you commit.

Neonatology Research Assistant/ Summer Scholar

What I liked

Combination of shadowing in Neonatal ICU and follow-up clinic, and clinical research experience, very hands on and educational. Exposure in fields relevant to my studies and career goals (pre-med, interested in medicine and public health). Mentors (doctors, fellows, residents) were extremely involved and invested in our learning and growth. Team-based research projects. Opportunities to get to know doctors in social/networking environments.

What I wish was different

Program coordinator and doctors very willing to help connect interns to any experiences they were interested in, get the most out of this if being proactive about building relationships and asking for assistance/ connections.

Student Nurse Extern

What I liked

NYU Medical Center is an amazing place to work. The nurses on my floor were so welcoming, knowledgable, and friendly. They were all willing to teach me new knowledge and skills. Furthermore, being in the ICU all summer, I was exposed to procedures, diseases, and patient care skills that I wouldn't see in clinical. They also offered all of the externs an option to stay during the school year (24 hr/month) to help out on their respective floors, especially with 1:1s.

What I wish was different

I wish there was better communication about the program during the interview process. I heard different things from the interviewer about the program than other prospective externs did, and we all heard things that were different from what actually occurred. For example, I was told we had one week of orientation but we had two weeks.

Advice

Take advantage of this amazing opportunity to get your foot in the door at an outstanding hospital. Make connections and keep in touch, especially if you are interested in working there after graduation.

What I liked

I like that it's applicable to my future career interest as I got a better sense of the numerous components involved with creating a research hypothesis, the different steps along the way (ex: recruitment, data analysis/collection methods, analyzing samples), and the regulations for a research study (ex: IRB). The employer also had lots of events that were tailored to engage employees, staffs, interns, etc. in different subfields of health and medicine. Being able to attend these seminars widened my view of my department as well as other departments that work along with it.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more hands-on exposure to other varying aspects of research rather than focus on data collection/analysis only. However, it is what the position entailed mainly so that is something I need to work on to increase my exposure to other varying aspects of research in a more "hands-on" sense.

Advice

Always ask questions, whether you're confused or curious, it's always good to ask questions either to your supervisor or another employee. And don't be afraid to ask what you consider as "stupid" questions. In most cases, these questions are meant to simply clarify, and a supervisor would always prefer a clarifying question as opposed to you not being clear about the subject at hand and then making a mistake in the future. Also, asking questions indicates your interest in learning more about the field, broadening your knowledge as well as giving a good impression to your supervisor.

What I liked

I enjoyed interning at the VA hospital because I gained an inside peek at what researching is like day-to-day. For example, I learned how to set up an electroencephalograph (EEG) and observed how researchers interact with their participants. I also attended meetings in which top neurologists determined which methods were most accurate for our study on the relationship between traumatic brain injury and memory. In addition, I’ve gained important career advice from my mentors about what courses and degrees best match my interests.

What I wish was different

I wish the process of getting my hospital ID could have been faster since it significantly delayed when I began interactive research.

Advice

Always take the opportunity to ask your peers and mentors about their career journey. By asking my colleague about her story, I learned about a great graduate program at NYU that I will likely pursue.

Only an 8 week program. It would have been nice to have the full 3 months of summer to work.

What I liked

I loved so many aspects of the internships! Getting to spend every day in the hospital observing an occupational therapist and getting to ask all the questions I had was incredible and I learned so much about occupational therapy. I also liked how they moved me to a different department each week so that throughout the four weeks I was there I got experience in multiple kinds of occupational therapy, a couple I had never experienced before. I also really liked the location - living in Manhattan was so much fun and I would love to live there again. I also appreciated how the program allowed us to live in an apartment building through NYU and then matched us up with other people from the program to live with, which was super fun!

What I wish was different

I really wish that the program was six or eight weeks rather than just four because I loved my experience so much. I also wish that we didn't have to go to as many lectures at the end of the day so that we could have had more time getting to observe at the hospital.

Advice

Ask questions, ask questions, ask questions! This program was an amazing opportunity for me to learn so much about occupational therapy so I tried to ask my therapists as much as I was able to.

I loved the lab environment, the challenges of it, learning to fix mistakes, I loved both of the different mentors I was able to work with because it showed me two different lab communities. I loved all of the time my mentor spent with me helping me grow in a lab setting and clarifying steps post graduation.
