University of Miami

Guide for parents and students mentor

May 2018 • Coral Gables, FL

What I liked

I love everything about my job! Having the opportunity to improve my public speaking skills, share my love for my university, make new friends, learn more about the university, and learn more about what admissions officers do (I aspire to become one as soon as I graduate) was an unforgettable experience.

What I wish was different

I would have liked more training on diversity.

Advice

It was extremely rewarding and brings awareness to the hard work that the admissions office does behind the scenes. It challenges one to develop not only professionally but also personally and increases appreciation for the university. I love the people I work with and what I do.

Assistant PCI Compliance Intern

May - September 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

The responsiveness of the staff as well as the fact that I was able to do my internship remotely since I could not afford to stay in Miami during the summer

What I wish was different

Honestly, nothing at all

Advice

Always be ready to learn new content as you're being instructed in an internship. If you do not know a particular software or how a process works do reach out to your supervisor or surf the web and self learn until you understand the underlying concepts of the trade. This will make you indispensable in your role.

Social Science Research Assistant

June - August 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I learned so much more about our research topic which focused on Chinese and Russian foreign policy. I also experienced how a research project can change depending on your findings, availability of sources, and the interests of stakeholders.

What I wish was different

Nothing really. I liked the independence of conducting research on my own and meeting weekly to discuss findings and decide how to move forward.

Advice

I became a research assistant by simply emailing a number of professors who focused on subjects I was interested in and one responded and she was thrilled to have me. I would say, just take a leap and put yourself out there!

Security Supervisor

January 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I work with an amazing team of colleagues who I’m happy to call friends. I’ve had great fun with a job and it has been a very rewarding experience overall in preparing me for a professional career.

What I wish was different

I wish I had joined sooner because my student job now has been such a rewarding time. I’ve developed my work ethic, my punctuality, and professional social skills during my time here. I wish I had joined earlier so I had had even more work experience and practise!

Advice

Definitely coming to work with a positive attitude and a smile. It really can make the difference between making a job a chore or exciting. When you smile, it rubs off on others and when team morale is up, the work atmosphere feels much lighter. Always be eager to come to your job and to help out wherever you can, become someone others depend on!

Research assistant intern

June - August 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

This was a once in a life time learning experience. ISCI is full of new technological advancements and the research done there is unlike any other.

What I wish was different

I wish they would teach more rather than expect the intern to know everything that they are talking about. They also seem to favor students who have family members that know someone in the institute which is very bias.

Advice

Go in knowing basic biology and cell molecular biology. They expect a lot from you and it can get confusing if you do not know what you are talking about
