Intern, Communications

The Organization

The Commonwealth Fund — among the first private foundations started by a woman philanthropist, Anna M. Harkness — was established in 1918 with the broad charge to enhance the common good.

Today, the mission of the Commonwealth Fund is to promote a high-performing health care system that achieves better access, improved quality, and greater efficiency, particularly for society’s most vulnerable, including low-income people, the uninsured, and people of color. The Fund carries out this mandate by supporting independent research on health care issues and making grants to improve health care practice and policy.

The Commonwealth Fund envisions a U.S. health care system that values and benefits all people equally — one that pursues equity in health care and health outcomes as well as in leadership and decision-making. We believe this requires an alliance of people and institutions across society working together to recognize the lived experience of all individuals; ensure the delivery of compassionate, affordable, quality health care; and strive for equitable outcomes for all.

Our Values and Commitment to Equity

The Commonwealth Fund’s founding principles guide us to this day and inform our core values. These values inspire our work; delineate our shared responsibility to one another, our partners, and our collaborators; and reflect our unwavering commitment to each other.

We strive to be Bold and Impactful. We are courageous innovators who seek to achieve our mission by maximizing the change we create and challenging the status quo.

We center Community and our Common Humanity. We foster an inclusive environment by valuing and respecting everyone and by amplifying diverse voices.

We anchor Equity and Integrity in all we do. We are principled changemakers who act responsibly to achieve a positive impact for all.

We work in a Collaborative and Joyful environment. We are cocreators of an environment where individuals feel valued, united by shared purpose, and empowered to contribute their best effort to collectively achieve the Commonwealth Fund’s full potential.
