Summer Intern/Computational Biology

Description of Department:

The Computational Biology (CB) team within GSK Genomic Sciences drives drug discovery and development across the GSK R&D organization from early to translational and clinical stages through integrative analysis of all forms of high-throughput biological data. We develop new computational and statistical strategies to better understand disease mechanisms, with an objective to advance novel medicines, and fill treatment gaps/ unmet medical needs, for improving patient lives. We are a very collegiate team with a strong collaborative work culture.

Job Description:

This position will be embedded within the Translational Omics CB group and allow the selected candidate to gain insight into computational strategy and experience in multiomic analysis in several disease contexts at a global Pharma company. The scope of the project can involve any aspect within an end-to-end workflow including new capability development and/or direct contributions to target identification and validation projects via computational analysis and database augmentation.

Basic Qualifications:

• Pursuing an MS or Ph.D. degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, computational sciences, biomedical/biological sciences, or a related field.
• Comfortable with a programming language (such as R, Python or Perl) for complex data analysis.
• Knowledge of fundamental concepts in biology and statistics.
• Must be eligible to work in the US at the time of, and for the duration of their employment. Candidates will be required to furnish evidence of US work authorization. STEM OPT extensions are not supported.
• Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the 12-week internship cycle (May-July/August).
• Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with bulk and/or single cell transcriptomic and/or epigenomic analysis
  • Skills to collect, integrate, mine and analyze complex biological data and translate them into testable hypotheses
  • Knowledge of and experience with common bioinformatics databases, resources and tools

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass a drug screen and background check prior to assignment target start date.
  • Must provide your own funding for relocation and commuting.
