Intern, Research & Development

The R&D internship is intended for current undergraduate or graduate students interested in a career involving Tissue Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, and/or Biomaterials.

Prior laboratory and/or engineering experience is required, though specific experiences with the expected duties is not required. The R&D intern will be responsible for participating in multiple aspects of basic and applied research for early-stage development of tissue engineered medical devices. Day to day duties include executing experimentation in support of new process methodologies and developing new medical device prototypes.

As a member of the research group, the R&D Intern will be trained in standard and experimental processing methods used at Integra. These methods may involve the use of biological and chemical materials, cell-based assays, advanced manufacturing tools, or other and laboratory equipment. These methods often involve the use of hazardous materials; in these duties and others, attention to safety will be required and training will be provided.
The R&D Intern will have a primary project or task area developed in partnership with a Scientist, with the aims of both fulfilling an R&D technical objective while also providing the intern with growth opportunities. Examples of such projects include:

  • Development and optimization of research procedures to expand R&D capabilities
  • Planning and carrying out research studies in biomaterial characterization
  • Production and evaluation of new product prototypes
Principal Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of their immediate supervisor, perform research activities using knowledge of basic science principles
  • Execute experimental plans and generate laboratory notebook entries and reports
  • Perform hands on laboratory work in support of new process development
  • Conduct routine testing and evaluation of tissue derived biomaterial constructs
  • Report out progress to cross functional and technical teams
  • Maintain functional, safe, and effective laboratory techniques and practices

Required Education
  • Completion of college-level coursework towards a degree in a related science or engineering field
  • Minimum overall GPA 3.0 or above
  • Relevant work experience may be considered in place of education requirements

Required Skills and Experience
  • Prior experience in a chemical or biological lab OR prior experience in engineering or manufacturing environment
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience maintaining a laboratory notebook
  • Experience with laboratory techniques including:
  • Cell and Molecular Biology (e.g., Culturing and Passaging Cells, In Vitro assays)
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Physical Testing (e.g., mechanical testing)
  • Biochemical Assays (e.g., ELISA, SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, cell proliferation)
  • Experience in implementing scientific procedures, methods, and tools for the manufacture and/or testing of medical products
