Sustainability Manager (1457)

A leader in sustainability in the life sciences, New England Biolabs (NEB) is seeking a passionate Sustainability Manager to develop and lead strategies, programs, and initiatives. The role will support the business by identifying and monitoring sustainability trends, developing and implementing tools to monitor performance, benchmarking against external organizations, tracking sustainability-related regulations and risks, and supporting internal and external communications regarding NEB’s programs and performance.

Examples of ongoing sustainability initiatives include:
  • LEED® certification of NEB headquarters in Ipswich, MA
  • Development of a wastewater treatment system that treats all the campus’ wastewater
  • Establishment of 1.7 MW ground solar array
  • Development of zero waste program, as well as zero net energy and carbon programs
  • Energy modeling and building performance tracking
  • Implementation of a green cleaning program

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead the NEBGreen initiative, an interdepartmental team established to create the necessary infrastructure for continual assessment of our environmental impact and prioritization of our sustainability initiatives and activities.
  • Collaborate with business units to identify opportunities, develop strategies and implement initiatives related to sustainability and social responsibility.
  • Manage the efforts needed to achieve sustainability goals by monitoring company performance, identifying and prioritizing actions needed to achieve targets, leading initiatives, and communicating progress to the broader organization.
  • Support external reporting and disclosures regarding the company’s sustainability programs and performance. Support internal reporting of progress versus metrics through scorecards.
  • Gain insight into the environmental footprint of the company’s operations, including supply chain, manufacturing, and distribution, by developing and implementing sustainability evaluation tools. This may include, but is not limited to, life cycle assessments, carbon footprint evaluations, and economic input/output modeling.
  • Benchmark against other organizations, including industry and non-governmental organizations, to identify trends, opportunities, and threats regarding sustainability.
  • Assist in B Corp recertification process by providing necessary data needed.
  • Represent the company at external sustainability meetings and forums.
  • Identify and monitor sustainability trends, market conditions, regulatory requirements, etc. Evaluate and integrate the information to proactively identify actions needed to address any potential impacts on company operations, products, and business.
  • Participate and/or lead cross-functional projects as assigned.
  • Assist in the development of internal and external messaging.

Required Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or related discipline
  • Proven development track record in the sustainability industry with 5+ years developing and implementing sustainability programs
  • 3+ years of experience driving reductions in energy, recycling, reuse, and waste management projects
  • Strong knowledge of environmental sustainability concepts and proficiency in recognized sustainability reporting methodologies and systems (GRI, EcoDesk, RBA, CDP)
  • Familiarity with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) processes, tradeoffs, and approaches
  • Ability to develop high-quality presentation materials and influence across functions and levels of the organization
  • Strong technical knowledge of HVAC, water, electricity, EMS/BMS, preventive maintenance, energy & sustainability, and building management applications
  • In-depth knowledge of global sustainability trends
  • Proven ability to drive sustainability programs and culture
  • Strong project management skills with a track record of successful cross-functional collaboration
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to simultaneously balance and adjust to multiple changing priorities and make decisions with speed and accuracy
