GIS Intern working in the Environmental Stewardship section of the Willamette Valley Project (WVP) for the Army Corps of Engineers. WVP is a major water resource project responsible for operating 13 dams and managing natural resources and recreation in the lakes and surrounding lands. We manage nearly 50,000 acres in the Willamette, McKenzie, and Santiam watersheds. The Environmental Stewardship section is known for community partnerships in natural resource preservation and restoration.
Primary duties include data acquisition, data management, natural resource GIS mapping, and field GPS data collection. Data analysis for projects related to cultural and historic resources, Master Plan development, threatened and endangered plants and wildlife, invasive plants, habitat restoration, easements, land ownership, and hydrology. Additional duties may include field support of other natural resources programs such as botany, wildlife biology, cultural resources monitoring, boundary surveys, and park operations.
Compensation amounts:
- $375 - weekly living allowance
- $40 weekly commuting allowance
- $950 - monthly housing allowance (12 months of housing)
- $2,500 duty travel reimbursement + one-time UP TO $650* reimbursable (to/from site travel for selected candidates outside the Eugene/Springfield area)
- Monthly Health insurance (optional for 12 months)
- AmeriCorps eligible ($6,495 education award for 1700 hours of service & completion of internship)
*Internship positions with the US Army Corps of Engineers will receive the travel allowance as a reimbursable amount, reflecting the actual costs based upon distance (mileage) traveled and current federal per diem rates. Interns are required to submit an expense report to SCA with documented round-trip travel costs for reimbursement. The requested reimbursement amount is capped at $650.

- Location Description
- Office is located on the north end of Fern Ridge Reservoir, about 13 miles west of Eugene, OR. Office address is 26275 Clear Lake Rd, Junction City, OR 97448. Fieldwork is concentrated at 8 of 13 lakes in the Willamette Valley, but day travel to all lakes may be possible.
- Training Provided
- Online ESRI ArcGIS training, local GIS workshops, other online classes or offsite training for natural resources, and first aid/CPR training. Additional on-the-job training in natural/cultural resources field monitoring methods.

- There are numerous recreational opportunities in the area, including hiking, camping, bicycling, boating, fishing, and rafting. Just over a 1-hour drive to either the Cascade Mountains or the Pacific Coast.
