Director, Health Equity Fellowship

Background

Position Summary
United Hospital Fund (UHF) seeks an experienced, resourceful, self-motivated, and detail-oriented program director to co-design, operationalize, launch, and manage a new health equity fellowship. This position will work closely with the senior vice president for policy and program and the president and CEO to transform a board of directors supported strategic investment concept into a sustainable program supporting the next generation of health equity change makers in the New York City metro area. The fellowship proper will provide education on equitable leadership, communications, policy, and community engagement to a cohort of up to 12 clinicians over an 18-month period. Selected fellows will also participate in experiential learning through dedicated time working on a community-based health equity project outside of their home institutions. The initiative will run for at least three consecutive 18-month cohorts of fellows, with the first cohort matriculating in 2024. 

The director will manage all stages of program development and lead the launch and ongoing operations of the fellowship. In collaboration with UHF leadership and reporting to the senior vice president for policy and program, the health equity fellowship director will develop and execute high quality recruitment, programming, community building, and cohort/alumni engagement. The director will collaborate on a program design that actively seeks input from internal and external UHF stakeholders, selected fellows, their home institutions, and partner community-based organizations to inform the continuous improvement of the fellowship experience and long-term engagement of fellows beyond the 18-month fellowship experience proper. 

Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to: curriculum development, fellow coach and mentor pool identification, contracting and management; fellow application and selection process design, launch, and outreach; coordination of fellow experiential learning; convening development and management; budget planning and management; fellow relationship management, including acting as the liaison between fellows, program faculty, mentors, and coaches; and, conceptualizing and procuring initiative evaluation support. The director will have the opportunity to work with leadership to determine internal staffing and external consultant needs and procure those resources within the bounds of the initiative budget. The chosen candidate will hire and supervise staff brought on to support the initiative. The director will collaborate with individuals across the organization to ensure efficient and effective information sharing, business process completion, and external communications about the fellowship. The fellowship director must work collaboratively, efficiently, and effectively within a fast-paced environment and must be a proactive, creative, and dependable team player. Excellent communication and project management skills are required. 

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education and/or Experience Required:  
  • Master’s degree in relevant field preferred. 
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in health care, academia, or other relevant field including significant and increasing responsibility designing and managing fellowship or leadership development programming. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for preferred education level.
  • Demonstrated experience co-creating and continuously improving programs with organization leadership and program participants. 
  • Experience cultivating and managing philanthropic or government grant relationships. 
  • A record of success in project management, execution, staff management. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:  
  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to UHF mission, health equity, developing change agents, and DEI principles.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including shaping, drafting, and editing various types of content, and representing the organization externally at relevant meetings and conferences. 
  • Ability to seamlessly manage strategy and execution simultaneously. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.
  • Ability to conceptualize and carry out projects to completion.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail including the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly.
  • Ability to partner with outside experts/advisors/consultants and organizations including the ability to understand, appreciate, and anticipate a range of stakeholder perspectives and needs.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to do as well as lead, working flexibly in a nimble, small agile team.
  • General understanding of the health care delivery system and health equity.
