In-Person Math Tutor - Baltimore, MD

Amplify is seeking in-person, part-time Math Tutors to provide small-group tutoring for students in Baltimore, Maryland.

Amplify Tutoring is currently looking to grow our Baltimore, Maryland tutor base with in-person tutors who are committed to ensuring students have the foundational math skills they need to be successful.
Amplify Tutoring works in close partnership with schools across the country to offer small-group reading and math tutoring. Make a difference working with Baltimore City students in Third through Fifth Grade by conducting tutoring sessions throughout the school year to build math skills in order to demonstrate mastery at or above grade level in mathematics.
**Candidates must be able to complete in person fingerprinting and provide lessons at least 3 consistent days a week in Baltimore, Maryland.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Amplify Math Tutor will play a meaningful and important role in supporting small groups of students in-person, multiple times a week. Reporting to the Program Manager of Tutoring Services, the Tutor will prepare lessons using Amplify tutoring materials to deliver tutoring sessions and monitor students’ progress.
The successful and effective candidate will be a punctual, consistent, enthusiastic, results-driven, and self-starting individual who enjoys working with young children and developing learning skills through game-like activities. The individual must provide outstanding support to students and be a strong communicator with all stakeholders including tutor coaches, program managers and other team members. They will combine a solid capacity for math instruction with strong relationship-building and problem-solving skills.

In this role, you will:


  • Provide in-person tutoring to small groups of 3rd-5th grade students three set days per week throughout the 2023-2024 school year. Each small group session lasts for 30 minutes.
  • Prepare unique lesson activities and materials while internalizing lesson objectives before each tutoring session, based on provided lesson plans.
  • Assist students in expanding their mathematical knowledge though an emphasis on mathematical thinking and problem solving.
  • Monitor progress of students’ math skill development regularly using provided assessment tools to determine how students are progressing and if tutoring instruction needs adjustments.
  • Implement feedback from program manager and tutor coach, and self-advocate for needs related to this position in a professional manner.
  • Attend and actively participate in synchronous and asynchronous virtual training and onboarding sessions. Tutors may also attend paid professional development workshops offered throughout the year.
  • Read and review email and internal instant messaging communication daily from the tutor leadership team to keep informed of program changes and updates.
  • Problem-solve common issues by following written instructions, and use excellent written communication skills to engage in synchronous and asynchronous leadership support.
  • Contribute to project-level data reporting for internal and external stakeholders by maintaining an up-to-date lesson log for each session delivered, tracking daily attendance, and answering periodic questionnaires.
  • Adhere to and implement Amplify and district operational procedures, such as signing into schools and requesting substitute coverage.
  • Interact and collaborate as needed with school staff in a professional manner.

Required education and experience


  • Available to deliver tutoring in-person for at least 3 consecutive hours, three set days per week at consistent times as determined by the school and Amplify Tutoring Program Manager throughout the 2023-2024 school year.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and confidence in K-6 math standards and helping students explain their mathematical thinking.
  • Minimum High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Fluent English speaker.
  • Demonstrates effective time-management skills: reliable, diligent, proactive, flexible, punctual for all commitments, and able to navigate in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable and skilled with technology (Web-based browsers, Google Meet, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Zoom) and regularly updates knowledge base to incorporate new tools and troubleshoot issues.
  • Enjoys working with elementary-aged students and demonstrates patience, flexibility, rapport-building and problem-solving skills with young learners.
  • Strives for clear and effective oral and written communication with students, coaches, program managers, fellow tutors and other team members.

Preferred education and experience


  • Knowledge of early math skills and math intervention, with a focus on grades K - 6. This also includes a familiarity with Mathematics Practice Standards.
  • Experience preparing and leading instructional activities with small groups of children.
  • Experience with English Language Learners and/or proficiency in a second language.
  • Prior experience working within school districts.
  • Completion of some college level coursework.

Additional information:

Time commitment: Amplify Math Tutors must complete an onboarding and training process prior to assignment of tutoring sessions. Onboarding consists of approximately 20 hours of asynchronous and synchronous training courses. Tutors will be compensated for their training time.
Tutors are assigned groups once onboarding and fingerprinting/background checks have been completed and cleared. Tutoring assignments will be highly dependent on customer demand and tutor availability. Tutors are expected to tutor in-person for at least 3 consecutive hours, three set days per week at consistent times as determined by the school. As tutor availability and school demand align, a tutor may have the option to tutor up to 18 hours per week (3 consecutive hours in the morning and 3 consecutive hours in the afternoon. Tutors will also be able to charge for their planning time for each tutoring session (up to 30 minutes per session).
Tutoring groups are typically scheduled for a semester-long period (approximately 15 weeks) and tutors are expected to commit to at least the full semester. Many partners participate in a full school year of tutoring, allowing tutors to be assigned tutoring groups during both semesters. Preference will be given to candidates who can begin training in September and tutor October through early June. Amplify provides paid professional development opportunities for tutors throughout the school year to further develop their skills.
Location: This part-time position is located in Baltimore, Maryland. Candidates must be able to provide reliable transportation to their tutoring assignments within Baltimore, Maryland. All candidates must be physically residing within the United States or the District of Columbia, a commutable distance to Baltimore, and meet U.S. employment eligibility requirements.
Documentation: If selected, fingerprinting and background checks will be required. Please be aware that this process can take several weeks. Tutors are unable to begin working with students prior to clearance.
Equipment: Tutors must be able to supply their own equipment including a laptop, webcam and microphone that can be taken to their tutoring assignment and/or be used during professional development activities and meetings.
Start Date and Timeline: We are currently hiring tutors for anticipated positions during the 2023-2024 school year. For qualified candidates, there will be opportunities to complete onboarding and training prior to anticipated fall start dates.
Interviews will begin August 28, 2023.
Fall onboarding cohorts are scheduled to begin in September.

We offer a competitive salary and provide compensation for preparing lessons and materials, delivering lessons, and onboarding/internal training.
The pay range for this role is $15 for professional development/training, $20 per hour for lesson preparation, and $25-$27 per hour for delivery of sessions.
The hourly rate will be adjusted to comply with all city and state minimum wage laws and regulations.
