Summer 2024 Intern Program: Engineering & Construction Roles (Syracuse, NY)

 

As we help clear the path to a greener future, we need to ensure our people continue to power our progress.  Our Gridtern Program provides current college students the ability to gain practical experience within the energy industry. Your summer will start with us on June 3rd 2024 and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking, opportunities to get involved in your community and most importantly, have fun! Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the below departments for summer 2024:

 

Aviation (Syracuse, NY)

The Aviation team performs and manages aerial patrols and inspections utilizing helicopters and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). For the summer, you will be able to participate and support a wide range of aerial operations. Project specifics will be determined throughout your summer with us.

 

Control & Integration (Syracuse, NY)

The Control & Integration team is responsible for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) capabilities from National Grid's control centers to substations located across the state. The department also creates the network topologies, specifies metering devices, and develops HMIs for alarm annunciation. For the summer you will be working on initiatives directed toward substation control and instrumentation. 

 

DG Standards & New Technology (Syracuse, NY)

The DG Standards & New Technology team supports the development of distributed generation (DG) standards and the evaluation and adoption of new technology needed to achieve our vision, collaborates on research performed by universities, government agencies, and non-profit research organizations, and manages pilots to assess new technologies. For the summer, you will support engineers in evaluating and assessing new technologies and research funding opportunities, help prepare newsletters highlighting key projects and initiatives being led by the Reliability and R&D group and assist in preparing updates for our distributed generation interconnection standards.

 

Distribution Control & Integration (Syracuse, NY)

DC&I Engineering is responsible for the specification, design, and implementation of innovative grid technologies on our distribution and transmission systems. The team delivers on a range of projects associated with regulated capital work plans, grid modernization initiatives, and customer enablement projects for Distributed Energy Resources. They provide solutions to new challenges that arise from the changing landscape of the electric grid. Throughout your summer, you will be able to support the development of all distribution and transmission control technologies in collaboration with our Electric Standards team. 

 

Distribution Planning and Asset Management (Syracuse, NY)

The Distribution Planning and Asset Management team analyzes the distribution and sub transmission system in our Central New York Service territory to support Company reliability, hosting capacity and load serving goals and criterion. For the summer, you will assist in developing programs to easily retrieve pertinent data and convert to information.

 

Electric Distribution Design (Syracuse, NY)

The Electric Distribution Design team designs all over head and underground facilities 13.2 KV and under. Including but not limited to new homes, commercial services to businesses and company driven work. The team designs the distribution (poles, wires & underground) infrastructure to bring power to National Grid customers and interact with a wide array of internal departments as well as customers, electricians, municipal employees, and developers from the community. The team also assists in emerging work like large DG (Solar) interconnects, EV charging stations, and other evolving new technologies. As a Gridtern, will have the opportunity to shadow multiple design representatives and learn what they do every day to bring power to our customers.

 

Electric Estimating - NY (Syracuse, NY)

The Electric Estimating Team provides estimates for complex and non-complex electric projects at various stages in their lifecycle, as well as provides forecasting support for complex projects that require additional funding to complete a project. The team also performs internal data controls, supports enterprise estimating software updates, tracks internal Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and supports external departments with all estimating needs. For the summer, you will have the opportunity to design reviews on drawings and in the field, perform data cleanup integrity support, and play a part in the development of estimating tools in addition to auditing project team meetings.

 

Gas Field Operations (Syracuse, NY)

The Gas Field Operations team is the front facing department to the customer at National Grid, working to provide a safe, reliable, and compliant product to our customer base. The team installs and maintains our gas network across our Upstate NY service territory. For the summer, you will be included in the oversight of a Field Operations Project, (instances in the past have included a DOT project and internal re-dig oversight). You will also have scheduled Site visits with both Customer Meter Services (CMS) and Gas Field Operations (GFO) teams. Some additional projects include the creation and maintenance of Compliance Metrics, various office projects to analyze and review data, participation in team meetings and opportunities to present on topics in a corporate setting.

 

Instrumentation & Regulation (Fulton, NY)

The Instrumentation & Regulation team provides maintenance and construction of Gas Regulation stations, Transmission Pipelines, and large commercial gas customer. For the summer, you will be supporting local supervisors, managers, and engineers with day-to-day responsibilities. These tasks will include involvement with new asset design review and feedback for future projects, in addition to site visits and completing safety compliance of ongoing work.

 

Option Solution Engineering(OSE) (Syracuse, NY)

The OSE team is responsible for performing high level engineering and evaluation of proposed capital projects involving Substation or Transmission Line assets. The team evaluates many different types of projects ranging from the replacement of aging or obsolete substation or transmission line equipment to the interconnection of new distributed generation facilities like wind and solar. The team has also been involved with projects involving emerging technologies and initiatives such as microgrids and battery storage. For the summer, you will support/review conceptual engineering document development, field visits, and working alongside OSE engineers to support special initiatives.

 

PM&C Civil and Substation Construction (Syracuse, NY)

The PM&C Civil and Substation team is responsible for overseeing the contracted work force that delivers a wide variety of Civil and Electrical projects. This team is responsible for the onsite safety, environmental compliance, and quality of construction for a wide range of projects at National Grid. Projects include duct bank and manhole installations and rebuilds, Underground Residential Development (URD) replacements, environmental control installations, and major substation equipment installations. For the summer, you will work with team members to review constructability and estimate projects with Contractors, review Health and Safety Plans and schedule jobs. Daily tasks would include overseeing excavation activities for equipment installations and installation of conduit, grounding, foundations.

 

Policy and Support (Syracuse, NY)

The Policy and Support team is the technical regulatory compliance organization within Protection Engineering. The team provides operational and technical support associate with Protection and Controls to ensures National Grids regulatory compliance.  For the summer, you will be collecting data and organizing this date to be used by the engineers across this team.

 

Property Services - Capital Projects Team (Syracuse, NY)

The Property Services Capital Projects team ensures our 3.2M sqft of buildings in Upstate New Yrok (UNY) are properly updated and renovated through construction investments of over $20M annually. These investments ensure our facilities are safe, comfortable, & functional to support our UNY employees. We strive to keep our customers happy while delivering projects safely, on-budget and on-time. As a Gridtern, you would be able to learn more about National Grid’s capital project delivery processes and practices in conjunction with our IPS partnership. 

 

Protection Engineering (Syracuse, NY)

The Protection Engineering team is responsible for designing control schemes that provide protection to the transmission system against fault conditions (short circuits on various equipment such as lines, transformers, and other substation elements). The team also sets protection relays, and for the summer you will be responsible for updating relay setting databases to ensure our information is up to date. You will also work alongside members of the department in supporting other various team projects.

 

Protection Telecom Operations (PTO) (Liverpool, NY)

The Protection Telecom Operations (PTO) team relays protection for substations, Voltage regulation, testing, commercial metering, and operations-based telecommunications. For the summer, you will be assigned a construction job to gain that hands-on experience. You will also oversee updating information from paper to SharePoint and ProjectWise, shadowing supervisors and techs to learn what a substation is and how relaying works and getting involved in any emergency work that becomes available during your time here.

 

Substation Engineering and Design NY (Syracuse, NY)

Our Substation Engineering and Design team is responsible for implementing all substation projects in our Upstate NY service area. These projects range from substation upgrades to allow for renewable generation to connect to the system, to new substations to strengthen our transmission system, and more. For the summer you will work closely with other engineers in this group to support them on various aspects of our engineering and design process. You will also have the opportunity to take weekly site visits to different substations in order to gain exposure to different types and vintages of substations and their equipment.

 

T&D Grid Modernization (Syracuse, NY)

The T&D Grid Modernization team is driving success and leading through the ambiguity of integrating smart devices and technology, laying the foundations for the network of tomorrow. We enable National Grid to drive towards a clean energy future efficiently and safely. For the summer, you will be supporting the Project Engineer/Project Managers on the execution of various Grid Modernization programs. Support may include attending project meetings, coordinating with the various support teams, analyzing, and monitoring project financials and milestones, and developing strategies for smart devices.

 

T&D Line Standards (Syracuse, NY)

The T&D Line Standards team is responsible for establishing standards, electric operating procedures, specifications, tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment for engineering, design, and construction organizations. You will be working under a licensed professional engineer to help standardize new construction standards and materials used in the transmission and distribution system. You will also help support post design and construction audits to ensure industry compliance requirements, in addition to several other hands-on activities with team, industry supplier and electric operations.

 

Transmission Asset Management (Syracuse, NY)

The Transmission Asset Management team is the owner of high voltage electrical assets that are utilized within the substations, overhead lines, underground cable, and telecom departments across Upstate NY. The team creates cases for asset replacement & asset replacement strategies, prioritizes projects and analyzes asset condition for our transmission system. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to design and implement an asset condition database and reporting system for transmission line structures and foundations. Complete tower modeling, draft substation asset condition reports, perform asset data integrity review & recommendations, and utilize GIS.

 

Transmission Planning - NY (Syracuse, NY)

The Transmission Planning team determines what Transmission Infrastructure development projects are required to maintain a safe and reliable system that meets FERC, NERC, NPCC, NYSRC, NYISO, NYDPS regulations, rules, and targets. For the summer, you will have the opportunity to support Facility Ratings database and calculations, complete NYISO Small generator preapplication form responses, and support other members of the teams with analyzing the transmission system performance and resulting needs.

UNY Gas Field Operations and Programs (Syracuse, NY)

The GFO (Gas Field Operations) team places the gas pipe in the ground and then runs the pipe to the end user, or customer. From there, CMS (Customer Meter Services) takes over, and they make sure the customer gets fitted with a meter and all the customer’s piping is tied together with National Grid’s assets. CMS also has the special cross over function of setting and handling electric and gas meters. For the summer you will work on special projects within your respective business area. Projects may range from process improvement efforts, efficiency projects, customers satisfaction projects, data dashboard builds, etc.

 

UNY QA Pipeline Safety (Syracuse, NY)

The UNY QA Pipeline Safety team provides second line assurance for pipeline safety. The team audits all gas fields from our in house and contractor workforce, including customer meter services, complex construction, damage prevention, leak survey, instrumentation and regulation. For the summer, you will have the opportunity to work and train different departments to provide a more streamline inspection process, while also working with our inspectors across Upstate New York.

What You’ll Need

  • Availability to start on program start date, June 3, 2024 and work full-time (40 hours a week) throughout your duration of the summer
  • Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2024 Semester
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree
  • Majoring in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field
  • Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States
  • Located within a commutable distance to the identified work location for the summer
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range

$19.00 - $23.00 an hour (Undergraduate Student)

$28.00 - $29.00 an hour (Graduate Student)

 

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.
