Air Pollution Specialist
The mission of the Chemical Analysis and Emissions Research Branch is to timely provide accurate measurements of mobile source emissions and fuels and technical expertise to support the California Air Resources Board (CARB) motor vehicle and clean fuels programs.
The Fuel Analysis and Methods Evaluation Section is looking for an individual with strong work ethics, strong background in analytical chemistry, and good communication skills. The section analyzes motor vehicle fuels at the Southern California Headquarters (SCHQ) in Riverside and aboard the Enforcement Division Mobile Laboratory (EDML). The results are used in determining compliance with the cleaner burning gasoline and clean diesel regulations. FAMES also provides supports to the Motor Vehicle Program by analyzing fuels used in emissions testing and by providing expertise on the impact of fuel properties on emissions. Both functions require the evaluation, development, and implementation of more precise and accurate methods of analysis. FAMES is also responsible for proposing the adoption of new and updated methods into California regulations.
Under supervision of an Air Resources Supervisor I, the successful candidate will carry out analyses of motor vehicle fuels using gas chromatography with flame ionization detector, supercritical fluid chromatograph, sulfur analyzer, x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, vapor pressure analyzer, and distillation analyzer. These analyses may be carried out at the SCHQ or EDML (which may be stationed at throughout the State to prepare technical reports and scientific papers for presentation and publication and perform other duties as required). The candidate will also develop new test methods for the regulated fuel properties. Other duties include completing data and quality control reports, performing routine maintenance on the instruments, procuring supplies, managing service contracts, and developing new analytical methods or improving existing methods. An incumbent may also prepare and edit technical reports and scientific papers for publication and oversee the inventory and disposal of chemical reagents.
This position requires chemical analyses of fuels in a mobile laboratory located throughout the State. The position is required to travel up to 20 percent of the work time and work from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. up to 30 percent of the time for fuel inspection program.

• Participation in the DMV Pull Notice Program and a sustained good driving record.

Working Conditions
This position is not currently eligible for telework. The incumbent will be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense.
