Nurse Extern – Bronson Hospitals (PRN)

About the Nurse Externship Program

  • Start Date: June 2, 2025
  • Shifts: 12-hour variable shifts (7 AM - 7 PM or 7 PM - 7 AM)
  • Schedule: Minimum 4 shifts per month (at least 2 weekend shifts)
  • Compensation: Paid, PRN position (not benefits-eligible)
  • Training: Two-week, full-time (day shift) orientation before starting unit-based work
  • Commitment: Nurse Externs are expected to complete the program on their assigned unit until graduation

Unit Placement & Selection

You will be asked to specify your top 5 preferred units in your application. Please include at least one Medical-Surgical unit, as availability in Women's & Children’s, ICUs, and Specialty Units is limited.

Role & Responsibilities

Under the supervision of an RN and in accordance with Bronson policies and the Nurse Practice Act, the Nurse Extern will:

  • Assist with patient care based on individual needs and unit requirements
  • Work collaboratively with nurses and healthcare professionals to enhance learning experiences
  • Communicate learning needs to the nurse preceptor and seek out growth opportunities
  • Provide physical care within the scope of professional nursing practice
  • Document and communicate patient responses to care

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited school of nursing and within one year of graduation
  • Must complete unit-specific orientation and core training requirements
  • BLS certification required
  • Completion of a pharmacology course or passing of a pharmacology medication test
  • Strong communication and critical thinking skills

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Work requires frequent standing, walking, and lifting light-weight objects (up to 20 lbs.), with occasional heavier lifting
  • Some mental and visual fatigue due to a variety of duties and deadlines
  • Expected to maintain a professional and collaborative work environment

Additional Information

  • This is a PRN position and is not eligible for benefits
  • Orientation will include hospital-wide, core, and department-specific training
  • Some aspects of the RN role cannot be assumed by the Nurse Extern; these will be outlined during orientation
