Financial Analyst

September 2019 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Being surrounded my intellectual people who are best at what they do. Able to expand my horizons and step out of my comfort zone to work longer hours that surround and depend solely on the financial markets.

What I wish was different

To be honest, nothing as of now. But as time goes on, you’ll be able to realize your priorities and learn from your past mistakes that can help shape your future path.

Advice

If you’re working at the San Francisco office, you have to be in by 6 in the morning as the markets open at 930 eastern time. So, get ready to start waking up early every single day. Also, grow your network, connect with people and get to know them outside the office as well. This increases your chances of being offered a full-time job offer.

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out to people in different divisions. Everyone is nicer than what Goldman's reputation makes you think

Operations Analyst Intern

May - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

The company culture, emphasis on teaching interns about the business and their specific duties, events like the pride parade and our volunteer days, and the support offered when you needed it.

What I wish was different

The amount of time given to accomplish tasks that you haven't fully learned is the same as senior team members, and lots of intern events that take time away from your daily duties

Advice

It's a sprint, not a marathon, be strong, outspoken, but humble, and ask questions often.

Summer Analyst

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Amazing people - extremely smart and talented, professional growth resources, mentorship program, excellent diversity affinity networks, challenging work, nice office, huge growth and learning opportunity, competitive but inclusive culture

What I wish was different

Better communication between internship program coordinators and direct managers, more support during first weeks while figuring things out

Advice

Leverage the network while you have it. GS is full of the best and brightest individuals, and they all have great advice and insights into the different functions of the bank. Everyone is really excited about meeting the interns and happy to help. It’s a great way to learn about how the bank’s functions interact, find the best team for you, and get to know the firm’s culture. Definitely get to know those on your team and on your floor, but branch out and talk to people from other divisions and from other offices globally.

Investment Banking Summer Analyst

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I was surrounded by exceptionally smart, kind, and interesting people and given real responsibility on major M&A transactions as I learnedly very quickly on the job. It was an environment where I felt fully respected and was given substantial exposure to very senior professionals and surrounded by generous analysts willing to teach.

What I wish was different

Advice

Start recruiting early, meet industry professionals in many different roles because there is so much more than investment banking in finance and it certainly isn’t for everyone, be kind to EVERYONE, triple-check work before sending, say thank you very frequently.

Operations Analyst

November 2017 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

A little over a year at GS and I am very surprised. It is everything you think and hear. GS has great people, rewarding and challenging work. Managers are supportive and always willing to help. An overall great entry level job if you are willing to work hard and embrace the corporate culture.

What I wish was different

A better work-life balance, as a GS analyst you are working 55-65 hour weeks. The average day is about 10 hours but you always find reasons to stay late or pitch in on a project

Advice

If you're going to work for a company like GS you need to show up to work ready to give it your all. Constant learning and multiple people requiring your expertise at any given moment. It can be very taxing and stressful - but at the end of the day, you are helping others - which is the best part.
