Investment Banking Summer Analyst

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I was surrounded by exceptionally smart, kind, and interesting people and given real responsibility on major M&A transactions as I learnedly very quickly on the job. It was an environment where I felt fully respected and was given substantial exposure to very senior professionals and surrounded by generous analysts willing to teach.

What I wish was different

Advice

Start recruiting early, meet industry professionals in many different roles because there is so much more than investment banking in finance and it certainly isn’t for everyone, be kind to EVERYONE, triple-check work before sending, say thank you very frequently.

Operations Analyst

November 2017 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

A little over a year at GS and I am very surprised. It is everything you think and hear. GS has great people, rewarding and challenging work. Managers are supportive and always willing to help. An overall great entry level job if you are willing to work hard and embrace the corporate culture.

What I wish was different

A better work-life balance, as a GS analyst you are working 55-65 hour weeks. The average day is about 10 hours but you always find reasons to stay late or pitch in on a project

Advice

If you're going to work for a company like GS you need to show up to work ready to give it your all. Constant learning and multiple people requiring your expertise at any given moment. It can be very taxing and stressful - but at the end of the day, you are helping others - which is the best part.

Summer Analyst

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked how everyone around me was extremely intelligent and driven. I worked for a unique group at goldman sachs that was innovative compared to the rest of the firm. They were open to feedback and ideas from all professional levels. Also, they had amazing GS talks that featured meaningful disscusions about diverse topics happening in the world today.

What I wish was different

I wish the culture at Goldman Sachs was more inclusive and flexible. People rarely work from home and seem drained by the amount of hours they have to work. Many people talked about how they had to sacrafice things that were important to them and there is no such thing as work life balance. Also, sometimes the way people give feedback is harsh and discouraging. However, there are many people at the firm who are encouraging and want to see you succeed.

Advice

Find a mentor, sponsor and advocate as soon as you can and make sure you form the relationship organically.
